Traveling While Unemployed

Travel-something we all dream constantly about doing, but usually put on the back burner while we’re working - or- like everyone in this world- life gets busy. Traveling while unemployed can become overwhelming and worrisome- it’s easier than you think.

During my unemployment, I’ve always taken the time to travel to see friends, explore a new place and get away from everything for a bit. I have found that it inspires me while exploring a new place, it also helps gain a new perspective on unemployment and your world. Here are some tips for traveling while unemployed:

Tips to Save Money:

  • Look at last minute tickets-many airlines and hotels will post last minute tickets if they are not sold out

    • Check out Hopper for deals on flights, car rentals and hotels

  • Call up your friends! Have any friends who moved away? Call them and ask to stay with them while you visit. I have reached out to friends and stayed with them while traveling-to repay the favor, I’ll buy their dinner, or bring a gift from home.

    • Always check in before you arrive-a heads up and a thank you note/gift goes a long way with people!

  • Pack your own snacks. Airports can be expensive-by packing nuts, protein bars, applesauce and easy things to pack-it can save you $20 plus dollars while sitting at the airport.

  • Check local transportation. Larger cities will have transportation to and from the airports-saving you the hassle of waiting for a ride share app. Local transportation can also help you get a feel for the city you’re visiting!

  • Look up the city’s visitor center website before visiting. Many cities will offer discounted tickets or free activities for first time visitors!

  • Set yourself a budget- allow yourself to enjoy your experiences, but not break the bank while doing so!

    • Typically I’ll take out $250 in cash before I travel for my ‘easy’ money. I’ll use this money for tips, coffee, snacks etc. If I'm buying bigger purchases such as meals, keepsakes, I’ll use my Capital One card for extra points.

  • Stay in the Great Outdoors!

    • A great way to save money on a hotel is camping at a near by State Park or National Park. More popular parks like Great Smoky National Park, Joshua Tree and Acadia fill up quickly-book your spot here!

Safety First!
Always, always, always- look up reviews, check the city’s safety reputation before you travel. As a woman traveler, I have witnessed and heard of horror stories while traveling alone. For inside the United States- check out the US State Department Travel Safety website to check on your destination

For safety alerts- register with STEP- Safety Traveler Enrollment Program. STEP allows you to sign up for notifications from the embassy at your destination. STEP also provides communication to you from your loved ones if an emergency were to take place.

Being Present

Its so easy to get caught up in the worry of losing your job, and worrying about finding a new one. One piece of advice I always reccommend is to be present while on your trip. As a natural ‘worry wart’ I’ve gotten caught up in my own head instead of enjoying the present moment of my journey.

I’ve also struck up conversation on flights or with ride share drivers and have made good connections and networking opportunities. You never know who you’re going to sit next to, or meet during this time.

Final Tip:

Have fun, be safe- and enjoy your travels while unemployed- you may never get this time again.
